balmy berry co didn’t start as a business idea.
It started in a pretty ordinary way, just trying to find something that worked for our own skin at home.
I’ve always had dry, sensitive skin. The kind where if something doesn’t agree with it, you know about it pretty quickly. Over time, I tried a lot of different products and routines, but nothing ever really felt consistent or left me super nourished.
At the same time, my husband works a trade and spends most of his days outdoors. Wind, sun, dry air — all of it adds up. He’s never been one for skincare, so anything we used had to be simple, easy, and something he’d actually reach for without thinking twice.
Then there were the kids.
Like a lot of families, we found ourselves wanting something gentle enough for everyone to use, without needing separate products for each person or worrying too much about what was in it.
So we started leaning towards simpler options.
Around that same time, we were already sourcing grass-fed meat from local farms — something that felt important to us for our food. As part of that, we began rendering down the fat at home to make tallow for cooking.
It wasn’t something we thought much about at first. Just another way to use the whole animal and avoid waste.
But over time, it sparked a bit of curiosity.
Tallow had been used traditionally for more than just cooking, and once we started looking into it, it quietly made sense. It was simple, familiar, and didn’t come with a long list of ingredients or complicated steps.
So we tried it.
At first, it was just for us. A basic whipped balm, made in small batches, used at night or when skin felt particularly dry.
That became the starting point.
From there, balmy berry grew quite naturally.
Not as a big plan, but as something we kept coming back to — refining the texture, keeping the ingredients minimal, and making sure it was something we were comfortable using every day, as a family.
It’s still very much grounded in that same idea now.
Simple, grass-fed tallow as the base. Small batches. Nothing unnecessary added in.
Just something that fits into everyday life — whether that’s dry skin, time outdoors, or just wanting to keep things a bit more straightforward.
If you’ve found your way here, chances are you’re looking for something similar.
Not perfect skin, not complicated routines — just something you can use consistently and see how it feels over time.
That’s where all of this started for us too.
