The Skincare Secret That Isn’t New

There’s a lot out there when it comes to skincare.
New ingredients, new routines, new “must-haves” every few months. It’s easy to end up with a bathroom shelf full of products and still feel like your skin isn’t quite settled.
Lately, there’s been a quiet shift in the other direction, back to simpler, more familiar ingredients.
One of those is tallow.
Most people wrinkle their nose the first time they hear the word tallow.
But once you understand what it is — and why it’s been used in skincare for generations — it starts to make a lot more sense.
So, what is it, really?
Tallow is rendered animal fat (typically from beef) that’s been slowly purified down into a smooth, usable form.
When it’s well made (and sourced properly), it’s quite different to what people expect:
soft, balm-like texture
neutral scent
a little goes a long way
It’s not trying to be anything fancy — it’s just a very simple, traditional ingredient.

Why people are curious about it again
A big part of it is how closely it aligns with what our skin naturally does.
Our skin produces its own oils to protect and maintain balance. Tallow has a similar fatty acid profile, which is why some people find it sits comfortably on the skin and absorbs without much fuss.
It’s not about claiming it “fixes” anything, it’s more that it doesn’t feel like you’re introducing something completely foreign.
A different approach to skincare
A lot of modern products are built around:
water as a base
long ingredient lists
layered routines
Which works for some people — but not for everyone.
Tallow-based balms tend to be:
more concentrated
used in smaller amounts
made with fewer, more recognisable ingredients
For some, that shift alone is what draws them in.
Who tends to reach for it
From what I’ve seen, people usually start looking into tallow when they’re:
tired of trying lots of different products
dealing with skin that feels easily irritated
wanting something a bit more minimal
It’s not about it being “better” — just different, and sometimes that’s enough to notice a change in how your skin feels day to day.
A slower way of doing things
What I like about it is that it encourages a different pace.
You’re not switching products every week or chasing quick results. You’re just using a small amount, consistently, and seeing how your skin responds over time.
If you’re curious, it doesn’t need to be a big shift.
Just try it in a small way, keep everything else simple, and give your skin a bit of space to settle. If you’re wanting to try a simple tallow-based balm, this is exactly the kind of formulation we’ve created at balmy berry co.
